The Role of Time in Data Visualization

A large share of the data collected in the business context contains a time dimension. Data scientists have many different ways to use statistics to analyze time series data, yet when it comes to visualization and exploratory visual analysis, the go-to method time is almost always a traditional line chart.
 
In this talk, we will survey the many ways visualization can be used to show and analyze the time dimension of a data set, or how to use the unique components of time to interactively explore a data set.

Michael Porath is a Product Manager at Splunk with a focus on data visualization and analytics. He is passionate about increasing data and visual literacy in the workspace, and in the general population.
Prior to Splunk, Michael ran Bay Area based agency Halftone, which helped clients with concept and implementation of data visualization projects. Previously he led the engineering team at Visual.ly, where he envisioned and created data visualization tools.

Michael also taught a graduate level class on Information Visualization at the School of Information at UC Berkeley. In his past life, before moving to the Bay Area, Michael worked for a number of companies in the Swiss financial and Telco sectors.
