Matthew Sims is a Postdoctoral Scholar and Lecturer with the School of Information at UC Berkeley. His research is focused on developing new natural language processing approaches for understanding narrative, with particular attention to literary fiction. Before coming to Berkeley, he was a data science fellow at Insight Data Science and worked as an AI ethics engineer at a fintech startup where he designed approaches to ensure that the machine learning models used to process user data were equitable and transparent. He received an MPhil from Cambridge University and a PhD from the University of Chicago.
