New solutions to complex social challenges are being enabled by the availability and use of data from a range of sources. Education, criminal justice and other public systems are even building the capabilities to prevent problems before they occur. Jim Shelton, the former U.S. Secretary of Education, will lead a discussion on how data is being used to address "intractable" problems and create unprecedented opportunity for individuals and communities.

Since joining Bridgespan in February 2008, Debby has worked with a range of clients working toward social justice, including philanthropists interested in catalyzing change, education reform organizations, and advocacy organizations working to support sustained change at scale.

As a former teacher, Debby has applied her belief in the transformative power of education in work spanning early childhood education, secondary education, and postsecondary education—where she leads Bridgespan's efforts. Sample projects include creating a place-based early literacy investment, helping the National College Access Network shift their work from access to success in college, and working with more than 70 field leaders to develop a national field strategy for higher education reform.

Prior to joining Bridgespan, Debby worked as an engagement manager and Social Sector Fellow at McKinsey & Company. Her for-profit work included international brand strategy, acquisition strategy, stakeholder influence, and pre- and post-merger management in the pharmaceutical, retail, and consumer sectors in six countries.

Debby earned her BS with honors from Haverford College and her MBA from the Wharton School of Business, where she was a co-founder of the Social Impact Management Initiative.

Courtney Bowman is a lead of Palantirʼs in-house Privacy and Civil Liberties team, with extensive experience working with local government (including law enforcement, criminal justice, health and social services) to develop technology-driven solutions to information sharing and inter-agency cooperation in a manner that respects applicable privacy, security, and data integrity requirements. Courtney also leads a number of Palantir’s initiatives to assist NGOs and law enforcement agencies in combating human trafficking and provide victims with rehabilitation and support services. Prior to Palantir, Bowman earned degrees in Physics and Philosophy at Stanford University and worked as a quantitative and economic analyst at Google. Bowman is co-author of the recently released The Architecture of Privacy.

President and Chief Impact Officer
2U, Inc.

James "Jim" Shelton is 2U's president and chief impact officer; managing programs 2U operates with its partner universities and overseeing university partner program implementation, research and university relations. Jim holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Morehouse College as well as master's degrees in both business administration and education from Stanford GSB and GSE.

Prior to 2U, Jim served as the Deputy Secretary and COO of the U.S. Department of Education and led a range of management, policy, and program functions in support of educational access and excellence for America's children, especially those least advantaged. While in government, he also launched and led the President's My Brother's Keeper initiative; and served on and led multiple interagency efforts focused on increasing economic opportunity and entrepreneurship and building the enabling technology and R&D infrastructures to accelerate progress.

Earlier in his career, Jim opened the east coast offices of NewSchools Venture Fund and became the program director for education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he managed a $2-3 billion portfolio of non-profit investments.
